Zapoint buys Jobster
By John Cook on Monday, April 5, 2010, 12:40pm PDT

Jobster has a new corporate parent. The online recruiting service which has operated as a unit of Seattle-based Recruiting.com has been sold to Zapoint, a four-year-old Brookline, Mass.-based startup which offers "talent management" applications to HR professionals.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Recruiting.com will continue to operate as a separate company. Jobster dropped that corporate moniker last year. The name change followed years of challenges at the company, including layoffs, management changes and strategy shifts. It is now led by Jeff Seely, the former CEO at Sharebuilder.

Amazon.com seeks 'seasonal campers' for holiday workforce
By Eric Engleman on Monday, April 5, 2010, 12:06pm PDT

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Amazon.com already. The online retail giant recently put out a call for RVers, or "seasonal campers," to work in three of its mega-warehouses during this year's holiday rush.

"If you enjoy living in the outdoors and work well in a fast paced environment, come join us between October and December at our fulfillment centers in Coffeyville, Kansas; Fernley, Nevada; and Campbellsville, Kentucky!" Amazon says in a job posting.

But anyone signing up for Amazon elf duty, take note: the company says warehouse workers "need to be able to lift, bend, stoop and squat repetitively" in shifts of up to 12 hours.

Microsoft, Apple set sneak peeks
By Todd Bishop on Monday, April 5, 2010, 10:00am PDT

With the iPad officially on the market, we're ready to turn our attention back to good old-fashioned mobile phones, apparently. And Microsoft and Apple are apparently more than willing to oblige.

Microsoft has started sending out cryptic invitations to an April 12 event in San Francisco, with the headline "It's Time to Share," according to Engadget. And Apple this morning surprised the industry with the news that it will be unveiling its iPhone OS 4.0 at an event this Thursday.

NYT's Friedman offers another plan for sparking innovation
By John Cook on Monday, April 5, 2010, 9:19am PDT

Just over a year ago, Thomas Friedman of The New York Times suggested a bold plan for rescuing the economy. Instead of offering bail out money to the battered auto industry -- which he dubbed "the losers" -- Friedman argued that federal dollars would be much better spent in the hands of the top 20 venture capital funds who could foster innovation. Friedman's idea was roundly criticized on TechFlash, where one reader noted that the government would be better off just burning the money.

But now Friedman is back with another column -- titled "Start-ups, Not Bailouts" -- which offers a variation on the original theme. This time, Friedman writes that the U.S. could spark innovation (and jobs) by setting new policies that allow the smartest people in the world to move here.

Stats: The iPad's first weekend
By Todd Bishop on Monday, April 5, 2010, 7:19am PDT

Apple sold more than 300,000 iPads in the U.S. as of midnight Saturday, the first day of availability, according to a news release issued by the company this morning. The number includes pre-orders.

Direct comparisons are tough, given all the variables (market size, pricing, etc.), but the result seems to stack up reasonably well against past Apple launches. In June 2007, Apple sold 270,000 original iPhones in the U.S. (PDF) in the first 30 hours of availability. The iPhone 3G, launched in more than 20 countries in July 2008, sold more than 1 million units in its first weekend.
