Early this year, on January 27, Steve Jobs, presented what
Apple lovers everywhere in the world insist will be the
world's best and most incredible new gadget - the iPad. And
while MADtv tried to come up with a skit featuring a made-up
product of the same name back in 2005, Apple's iPad is
nothing if not original. There has been no product like iPod
with the power to turn up the noses of its owners and let
them look down upon poor souls that don't worship Steve
Jobs, or iJobs, the new name he is rumored to be adopting.
Apple likes to make the new releases more about the culture
and the life-style of the company than the product itself.
The technology has focused on being compact and smaller and
more convenient, and Apple has done the exact opposite,
creating a product that is less portable and larger than a
cell phone. Rather than being a portable device, the iPad
has been designed to fit in the pocket of Paul Bunyan's
pants. It is like Apple has created a massively over sized
iPod and instead of fuzzy pictures you can see all the
details of the picture via iPad's 9.7-inch LED-back lit IPS
display. There has been some rumor that the picture is so
clear that you can even see the glimmer of the money wasted
on the product reflecting in the screen.
Many people had confused reactions - why do I need an over
sized and large version of the iPhone? Wouldn't that be like
trading in my iPhone for the one used by Zack Morris on
"Saved By The Bell"? But the company defied expectations
again. Apple decided to decrease the number of features; the
connectivity on 3G does not come standard unless you pay an
additional $129 for it. While most companies have focused
and tried to pack in more features for less money, Apple has
done the opposite.
You will not be able to take pictures with iPad because it
does not feature a camera. Apple probably did not include
this feature on purpose, so that you would not see your
photos on the stunning, smaller-than-laptop display and get
distracted from real life. Also those individuals referring
this device as an iPhone on steroids will be put in their
place, once they realize that it can not make phone calls.
In essence, the iPad is really an iPhone with steroid-like
side effects. But this is not a bad or poor design. Apple
realized that by owning this product, you would not want to
be on the phone or you would not have any use for phone
calls when you have such a wonderful and awesome device.
That's not the only way Apple managed to ensure that you
wouldn't be able to communicate with the outside world while
using this device, either. You can not multitask with the
said product. So, that means while you're busy scrolling
through vibrant pictures that you couldn't take with your
iPad, you won't be able to post a Twitter update about how
you prefer to browse the web without seeing half of the
content on it. The iPad doesn't support Flash, which is used
to create countless games, applications and websites, and is
present on nearly every page you'll ever visit. Yep, this
sure seems way better than a net book or notebook.
But there is a good news. You won't have to be concerned
about your hard drive space because the iPad's standard
capacity is 16GB and there is no slot for external memory
card.
The most limiting factor is the price. If you want to buy an
iPad, you will have to pay $499 (price for a non-Apple
laptop). If you decide to get 3G with that, it is going to
cost you $629. This might be a perfect time to spend
disposable income you don't have. It's not as though ten
percent of the country is unemployed or that a massive
earthquake just demolished an island nearby.
After all said, the iPad is still a unique hybrid of
existing devices - an iPhone without camera or calling, a
laptop without a keyboard or the ability to fully experience
the internet and surf the web, all from a company that
actually declared itself Almighty.
