EnerG2 raises new funds
By John Cook on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 1:55pm PDT

EnerG2, a University of Washington spinout that is developing advanced materials to increase energy storage in electric vehicles, has raised an additional $3.5 million in financing, according to a filing with the SEC. The investment follows a $21 million federal grant which EnerG2 announced last summer, money that the Seattle startup said it planned to use to build a facility in Albany, Oregon to produce "high energy density nano-carbon for ultracapacitors."

McKinstry buys 'smart building' software unit from Itron
By John Cook on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 1:26pm PDT

For some reason, there's been a lot of news today from Seattle companies making announcements related to more effective ways to manage energy use in buildings and homes. Earlier, I reported on the new financing round for EnergySavvy, a Seattle startup which has created a new Web-based scoring tool designed to help home owners save money on their energy bills. Also crossing the wires today was news that Optimum Energy had released a new online measurement and management service designed to help building owners detect problems with heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

And now word comes of yet another piece of news in the energy management sector. Seattle-based McKinstry today announced that it has acquired the Enterprise Energy Management Suite from its longtime partner Itron, a Web-based offering that monitors how much energy and water buildings are using.

aQuantive mafia strikes again: Galgon invests in EnergySavvy
By John Cook on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 10:58am PDT

Former aQuantive executive Mike Galgon has led a $315,000 investment in EnergySavvy, the Seattle startup which has created an online tool designed to help people save money on their energy bills. Galgon, who co-founded aQuantive in 1997, had some obvious connections to the company.

EnergySavvy's chairman is none other than Karl Siebrecht, the former president of aQuantive's Atlas unit and current CEO of Seattle startup AdReady. The startup -- which introduced service in February -- had previously raised about $500,000.

U.S. Marine Corps General: 'PowerPoint makes us stupid'
By John Cook on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 6:59am PDT

The New York Times today has a fascinating story on how the U.S. military uses PowerPoint, the ubiquitous Microsoft presentation software which reporter Elisabeth Bumiller says "has crept into the daily lives of military commanders and reached the level of near obsession."

But the best part of the story are the reactions from the top military brass who argue that PowerPoint's structure -- in the words of Bumiller -- "stifles discussion, critical thinking and thoughtful decision-making." The story quotes U.S. Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis who bluntly pointed out at a conference earlier this month that "PowerPoint makes us stupid."

Microsoft gets Songsmith patent
By Todd Bishop on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 6:38am PDT

Remember Microsoft Songsmith? If you ever saw this promotional video for the Microsoft Research product, it would be difficult to forget. But the technology is interesting -- using algorithms to analyze any song that someone sings into a computer, and automatically creating a virtual band to accompany the song when it's played back.

Today's news: The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office has awarded Microsoft a patent for the technology, under the title of "Automatic accompaniment for vocal melodies."

Ground Truth raises $7M to bring insight to mobile phone usage
By John Cook on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 5:46am PDT

Just three months after emerging from stealth mode, Seattle mobile measurement startup Ground Truth has scored a substantial $7 million second round of venture capital financing. Total funding in the 20-person company now stands at $9.6 million. Leading the deal were new investors Emergence Capital Partners and Openair Ventures, which were joined by existing investors Steamboat Ventures and Voyager Capital in the deal.

Ground Truth is developing a new way to track how people use their mobile phones, relying on data provided directly to the startup by wireless carriers. It then packages that data and resells it to the wireless carriers as competitive intelligence.

Verdiem partners with Cisco
By John Cook on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 5:14am PDT

Throughout its nine year history, Verdiem's software has been used to manage the power consumption of personal computers at government agencies and corporations. Now, the Seattle startup is making a big move to expand that market through a partnership with Cisco Systems which will bring the power-saving technology to a wide array of networked devices.

As part of the agreement, Verdiem's software will become of a key component of Cisco's EnergyWise Orchestrator. Mad Money's Jim Cramer likes Amazon, pans Google's stock
By John Cook on Monday, April 26, 2010, 6:30pm PDT

Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, loves to skewer the stock picks of CNBC's Jim Cramer. So, you should probably take any of his stock advice with a grain of salt, right?

Today, Cramer tossed his considerable weight behind Amazon.com, predicting a $150 price for the Seattle online retailer. "I do believe that Amazon is now ready to run," advised Cramer. "I don't think Google is. That is a very different situation. Google lost China. Amazon is now on the upswing."

Former QL2 execs sue company's interim CEO and board members
By John Cook on Monday, April 26, 2010, 5:53pm PDT

Two former high-ranking executives at QL2 have sued members of the Seattle software company's board as well as the acting CEO for failing to make severance payments after they were forced out earlier this year. Former CEO Russ Aldrich, who was let go on April 5, and former general counsel and vice president of operations Scott Milburn, who lost his job on February 9, allege in separate lawsuits filed in King County Superior Court earlier this month that they are owed thousands of dollars in severance pay as spelled out in their employment agreements.

Supreme Court revives violent game debate, with Arnold's help
By Todd Bishop on Monday, April 26, 2010, 5:46pm PDT

When I reached Mary Lou Dickerson on the phone this afternoon, I halfway expected the Washington state representative to be overjoyed at the news that the U.S. Supreme Court had decided to review a lower court's ruling that struck down California's prohibition on the sale of violent video games to minors.

Dickerson championed a similar law in Washington state that was ruled unconstitutional six years ago. And a favorable ruling from the Supreme Court in the California case could revive the possibility of such a law here. But she made it clear that she has moved on at this point, not expressing much interest when I asked if she would considering raising the issue again in our state.

"It took some time, but when I last checked the industry was doing fairly well in complying with its own rating system," she said, referring to ESRB ratings. That can vary from year to year, she added, but her other aim was to increase awareness of the issue among parents. On that point, she said, "I think that parents are much more aware now."

Oddly enough, Dickerson's longtime cause has been taken up in the meantime by none other than California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a.k.a. The Terminator.

Microsoft's 'Mac clone' defense not working yet in Datel dispute
By Todd Bishop on Monday, April 26, 2010, 2:00pm PDT

A federal judge has dismissed one count and allowed five others to proceed in Datel Design & Development's antitrust suit against Microsoft over the Xbox 360 maker's crackdown on unauthorized memory units -- small storage devices that plug into the console for saving games and other data.

If you're just tuning in, it's an interesting case that could establish some key rules of competition in the video-game console industry. Datel alleges that Microsoft is unfairly controlling the market for Xbox 360 accessories, creating a competitive advantage for its own memory units. Microsoft argues it was within its legal rights, and acting in the interest of users, when it issued a software update that prevented Datel's cheat-enabling memory units from working with its console.

Among its legal defenses, Microsoft cites a case in which a judge ruled that Apple was within its rights to prevent a company called Psystar from offering computer systems that ran Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware, because of an end user license that prohibited the practice.
