Some Tips For Successful Portrait Pictures

By Chuck Wilson

From time to time, individuals have been the theme of many prize-winning photographs. Yet, portrait photography isn't only about taking a picture of a face. It is also about making a person or several people come alive within the picture by showing them at their greatest.

A well done portrait photo doesn't follow convention, and displays the subject in a state of mind that makes the photograph exceptional. However, typical family or single person portraits are also clicked and they are popular for family albums.

The most significant aspect in a portrait photograph is the close shot, and the face of the subject must emerge prominently in it. This is achieved by a common camera trick of making the background a little bit foggy and indistinct so that the subject's face gets the maximum focus. Whereas, when both the individual and the background are important, like a photograph taken with the person in a scenic landscape, then a standard aperture setting is advisable.

Without sufficient light available to shoot, photographers find it tough to take the perfect picture. However, some important photography guidelines if seriously followed can yield that perfect portrait photograph. If the individual is made to sit by a window in a position in which the sun's rays fall only partly on the face, then the photograph normally ends up looking quite good. A reflective surface can be used to light up the other side of the subject's face. However, However, portrait photographs taken in studios under artificial lighting mostly come out better than those clicked outside.

Another important thing that you must keep in mind is that the more at ease a subject is during the photography session, higher the chances are of getting an ideal portrait photograph. If the subject doesn't feel comfortable while being photographed and doesn't pose naturally, then even the highest quality camera and lighting technology can not ensure a good portrait.
