Dog Training: Your Dog's Best Defense Against Poisonous Plants

By Dr. Nortey Omaboe

Dog training isn't only meant to stop digging and chewing behaviors, it's meant to prevent them from starting. A top dog trainer says that using dog training tips early in a pet's life will keep dangerous things out of her mouth.

In training your dog, you've probably noticed that he uses his nose to determine if something smells like food. If the smell is not repulsive, that item is likely to end up in his mouth. Puppies, with their curious natures, are particularly notorious for viewing the world as their biscuits.

Besides wreaking havoc on your landscape and your interior dcor, plant chewing can wreak havoc within your dog. Amputated plant leaves grow back, but damage to your dog, caused by eating that plant, can be as serious as death.

Here are some common plants that are toxic to dogs:

Yellow Sage, also called Lantana or Ham 'n Eggs, bears flowers that are white, blue, yellow, orange, and red. Its lantadene A and B can result in jaundice, photosensitization, constipation, weakness, lessened appetite, and ulcers.

Dumbcane, or Dieffenbachia, is not a smart snack idea. It's big, variegated leaves are composed of sharp cells that cause burning sensations, excessive drooling, edema, erythema, and irritation and swelling of oral tissues.

Philodendron is great for household oxygen levels, but this common vine isn't good for your dog's health if consumed. It causes vomiting, swallowing difficulty, excessive drooling, and irritation of oral tissues.

Caladium: This plant's leaves are heart shaped and display varying patterns of pink, white, and green. Ingestion can result in oral irritation, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, and vomiting.

Elephant Ears: Sounds yummy, but its nature dictates otherwise. This plant is a larger version of the Caladium described above, with similar ingestion symptoms.

Ivy doesn't have to be Poison Ivy to be poisonous to dogs. Its leaves are culprits for excessive salivation, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Rosary Pea, or Prayer Bean, bears red berries that have historically been used to create rosaries. You might want to pray, after calling the vet, if your dog ingests any of these, because he will be subjected to shock, fever, elevated heart rate, bloody stools, bloody vomiting, tremors, and possible death.

Mistletoe: This holiday kissing treat is no treat for a dog's system. Its glossy green leaves and white berries can cause gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular collapse, dyspnea, bradycardia, erratic behavior, vomiting, diarrhea, and hypotension.

Castor Bean might be the source of castor oil, a common remedy, but its blue, prickly beans house seeds which contain ricin, which can cause bloody diarrhea, fever, central nervous system decline, loss of coordination, breathing difficulty, trembling and weakness, appetite loss, convulsions, kidney failure, vomiting, excessive thirst, and irritation of oral tissues.

The Peace Lily delivers anything but peace to a dog's system. This plant is characterized by its large, draping leaves and sizeable white lilies. It contains calcium oxalate crystals, which cause extreme drooling, swallowing difficulty, and oral cavity irritation.

Schefflera: Also known as the Umbrella Tree, this plant has woody stems and sectioned, multi leafed bunches of glossy green foliage. If ingested, it can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.

The Mum, or Chrysanthemum, is famous for its colorful fall blooms and light green leaves atop woody stems. It's infamous for the diarrhea, vomiting, extreme salivation, gastrointestinal disturbance, coordination loss, and depression that it can cause.

This is just a sampling of plants that can have poisonous effects on your dog. Some others include Autumn Crocus, Yew, Amaryllis, Kalanchoe, Cyclamen, Oleander, Marijuana, Azalea, Rhododendron, Tulip, Narcissus, Sago Palm, Lily of the Valley, Jack in the Pulpit, Hyacinth, Delphinium, Fox Glove, Aster, Poinsettia, Daffodil, and Iris.

Firstly, put houseplants out of your dog's reach. Then supervise her when she's outside. The dog training techniques included in practices like clicker training and crate training will assist you in training your dog to "leave" plants alone. Training a dog can greatly contribute to her safety, especially when positive dog training tips teach her to make the good decisions that you expect: the ones that will keep her mouth off of poisonous plants.
